Call Me Maybin? Tribe Sign Veteran

News reached us this afternoon that the Indians have signed outfielder Cameron Maybin to a minor league deal. The 31 year-old veteran was recently released by the Giants after a disappointing spring where he hit a paltry .163 in 43 at-bats. Maybin was also arrested for a DUI earlier this month, which won't have helped his chances with the San Francisco club.

Maybin featured in 129 games between Miami and Seattle last season, slashing .249/.326/.336 with 4 home runs and 10 stolen bases. He will report straight to Triple-A Columbus and add some depth to the Indians outfield, but he'll be competing with Carlos Gonzalez, Brandon Barnes and Oscar Mercado for playing time.

The Tribe opened the new season yesterday with an outfield consisting of Leonys Martin, Tyler Naquin and Jake Bauers, with Jordan Luplow and Greg Allen coming off the bench. However, the outfield situation is far from settled so perhaps Maybin fancies his chances of cracking the big club.

I don't have much of an opinion at this stage but can't really see the harm in Cleveland kicking the tires on Maybin to see what he could potentially offer. He turns 32 next week but may still prove he could be of value, especially when you consider the current options the Indians have.
